Great news!!
2025 sees the return of the BLACK SWAN ARTS
YOUNG OPEN ART COMPETITION AND EXHIBITION
The Young Open competition is open to all young people aged between 8 and 19 years. It is probably the largest art competition in the South West aimed solely at young people – it’s definitely the best!Who can enter
Anyone can enter, no matter where in the world you live, your background or ability.Don’t think you’re good enough?
Even if you don’t think you have the skill or the confidence, why not challenge yourself and give it a go? You’ll be surprised at what you can create.Don’t have a clue what to make?
Not a problem. Think about what interests you; what makes you smile or laugh; what makes you angry or upset; what or who you care about. This is your chance to express yourself. Take up the challenge and see where your imagination takes you. What sort of thing can I enter?
We are happy to see any piece of original artwork which demonstrates your unique style. You may be really into nature or the environment. You might love horses or football or video games. You could show us how you feel about an issue that’s important to you like animal welfare, war or climate change. You may have a special friend, family member or pet. Perhaps you have had to deal with difficulties or loss and would like to create an artwork that helps others understand the challenges you face.Your artwork can be about any aspect of the lives of young people today. It is always a great privilege to exhibit whatever motivates, delights and fascinates you. So give it a go – you’ve got nothing to lose.
What materials can I use?
There is no need to buy expensive stuff. Look around you, see what is available at home or at your school or club. You can use paper, card, fabric, pencil, paint, plastic, clay, video – in fact, anything you can make art out of. Maybe you could use something you’ve never worked with before? What about recyclables? You can make a sketch or do a painting or take a photo or collect objects to make a collage. Do you want to make a statement about all the plastic we are throwing away? Could you make a model of your cat out of clay?Yes, you may need to buy glue, pencils, paint or paper, but search your cupboards first. Ask your parents or teachers what they have you could use to create your piece. At Black Swan Arts Young Open, anything goes!
